NEWSLETTER FOR 09/03/10

School News

School pictures will be Wed., Sept. 8 starting with preschool students at 8:00 in the St. Paul’s commons area. School picture forms will be sent home with your student Friday.

The first PTO meeting of the year will be Monday, September 13. All parents of students from PreK – 8th grades are encouraged to attend. We will be voting on a Vice President and a Secretary. Those not showing up are more likely to be voted into this position. You need to be present, in order to turn down this honor.

Don’t forget to collect Milk Moola, Box Tops for Education, and Hy-Vee receipts. Turn them into your child’s teacher. These easy fundraisers usually raise the school around $1000 a year. Thanks for your help! Also, pop cans can be turned into the school can wagon at the Klinger site. These fundraisers help pay for the field trips and special learning activities the students do each year.

Preschool News
We have been very busy meeting new friends and familiarizing ourselves with our school routine. The students are enjoying our new system for center time. Mrs. Even and I have been spending much of our time during center time showing the students different ways to use materials in each of the centers. The students are excited about each of the new centers!

PreK-K Grade News
Our week was filled with colors, shapes, and practicing our left and right hands.
We learned a new silly song that taught us left and right. We read books about our favorite things to do at school, and graphed how we get to school each day.

1st–2nd Grade News
We have been enjoying our new Social Studies books. They are full of great pictures and information. Our first unit is on Rules & Laws. The students are also enjoying using a math text book called, Everyday Mathematics. Each day there is a lesson to learn, lessons to revisit material we have already learned, and games are incorporated for different concepts to help us learn them. The lessons push us to succeed since we practice the concept in several different ways.

3rd-4th Grade News
In reading, the students have been listening to a story and practicing comprehension and word decoding strategies. They also performed a play called “The Prince Frog” for the 5th and 6th graders. They did an excellent job!

5th-6th Grade News
The students began their autobiography unit in writing this week. During the beginning of the week, they made timelines about their lives using at least 20 important events and a lot of pictures. They did a fantastic job! The students also discussed and wrote about what they want to have happen in the future. It was amazing to see what they thought their future would hold. The students also created interview questions for their parents to get more information on their first few years of life for their autobiographies. Make sure to ask your student about their future and their interview questions.

7th-8th Grade News
This week in school was very exciting! We did a lot of partner activities. In reading, we read a very interesting book called The Ransom of Red Chief by O. Henry. It was about this kid named Johnny that got kidnapped for a ransom. It had some interesting twists in it.
Last week, the boys’ and girls’ sport teams had lots of practicing going on. Last Saturday, the boys’ football team had three games! Even though we didn’t win, we had lots of fun during the games. This year is different from last year because we have another teacher. Her name is Mrs. Swales. We also have Mr. Swales who taught us last year. Both are very fun teachers to have. Mrs. Swales teaches us language, reading, and spelling. Mr. Swales teaches us history, science, and math. I am really looking forward to this year. I think that this will be my best year yet, and that I’m going to learn a lot this year.
